Book Reviews: December 2014

I'm on hiatus from work during the Christmas/New Years holidays and I've been burying myself under blankets with a new book every day. After I read the Bronze Horseman trilogy I needed something to cure my book hangover. I scoured Goodreads and all the Best of the Year book lists and tried a few out. Thankfully each one has been a page-turner. I've been sucked in and I've finished most within a day

The Martian - An astronaut gets stranded on Mars. The narrator has a great sense of humor all things considered and his new mission to survive or be rescued doesn't always go to plan. The tension felt like the movie Gravity. There's a lot of math and science talk but the personality of the narrator makes it actually interesting. The author did a lot of research

The Invention of Wings - Historical Novel during the time of slavery in South Carolina. The point of view switches between Sarah, a young lady raised in a slave owning family, and her slave Handful who tries to make her own freedom however she can. Sarah grows into a passionate Abolitionist and Womens Rights activist in the early 1800s and does everything she can to help Handful become free.  The whole book took on a new meaning once I found out Sarah was a real person and the book was based on her letters and speeches. Feel a bit of girl power from the book. Of course it's an Oprah book club book.

All the Light We Cannot See - WWII historical fiction following a young blind french girl as she lives with her reclusive Uncle as well as a smart young german boy that gets swept up into the Hitler Youth war machine. Their lives intersect for only a short moment but their stories were so interesting and unique I had a hard time putting it away.

Me Before You - An active, adventurous man has a terrible accident that leaves him wheelchair bound. A young woman needs a job in her small English village and becomes his caretaker. She's chatty and optimistic and he's depressed and doesn't want to live.  She is good for him but by the end I WANTED TO THROW this book. I understand not everyone can have a happy ending but I feel misled.

Big Little Lies - A very captivating read about three women with kids in the same kindergarden class. You know from the beginning someone is dead but you don't know who or why. The book backs up to the moment they become good friends. As it plays out you realize they each have their own family dramas kept secret from each other. The twist and reveal are shocking, I gasped out loud and had to read it again.

I have a few more books on my kindle I'm ready to sink my teeth into. So far their rankings on the best books lists have been well deserved.

Is there a way to make reading books into a side job that I could get paid for?  Seriously let me know.
